2011 Try Boro Kids Triathlon

Start of the swim courseThe 3rd Annual Try Boro Kids Triathlon has a lot to live up to, based on the success of the past two years, and it did not disappoint. With close to 250 kids signed up for the 3rd straight sellout, kids came ready to compete from all over Tennessee and neighboring states. Most kids came from right here in Middle Tennessee; Murfreesboro (99 participants), Franklin (35), Brentwood (22), Paris (16), and Spring hill (13) bringing the most. It is also interesting that for 76 (31%) kids, it was their first triathlon!
The breakdown of ages and gender shows that most of our triathletes are between the ages of 8 and 11, with the 10 year old girls being the highest at 32 participants, followed by 10 year old boys (29), and 11 year old girls, 8 year old boys, and 8 year old girls at 21 apiece.
With a beautiful start to the morning. Participants and families started arriving at 6:00AM, with the expected start time being 7:15AM for the Seniors and 7:45AM for the Juniors. With Tam Clark, our emcee, starting the morning off, the Senior race started on time with our first participant in the water. Each kid enters the water, feet first, every 5 seconds. They are seeded based on their swimming ability to lessen the number of kids passing others in the water. This seems to make for a more streamlined process and flow to the swim course.
The Seniors quickly made it through the 200 yard swim course and transitioned to the 4.8 mile bike. The bike course is a 2.4 mile loop, with the Seniors doing two loops. It is free of main roads, which makes it safe and free of cars.
Approaching the finish line.The Senior run is mainly off road and goes around most of the softball and baseball fields. There a re a few small hills, but kids usually have an easy time getting a good time. As the come through the StarPlex baseball fields, they can see the finish line, which was marked with a balloon arch.
Once the kids make it to the finsih, they are greeted with a finisher medal, a smoothie from Smoothie King, some fruit cups, and other goodies as they relish their victory.
...and the Juniors are off
Getting some much needed waterThe Juniors are the next in the water and they do half the distance of the Seniors. They are always the most fun to watch as they tackle the swim course with determination. They always look so serious as they take a cup of water or make it to transition, but when they cross the finish line, the bright smile is back with a vengeance.
Awards
Awards for a triathlon are quite secondary to the accomplishment of just finishing. Every kid wins as they cross the finish. It does not matter what their time was or which place they came in, the finish line is the REAL accomplishment. So for all of the kids that participated, they are to be congratulated. You can now say to everyone of them: "Congratulations, you are a triathlete."
Some of our award winnersAwards were given to the top 3 in each age group and gender, as well as the top beginner in each group. For example, for the 8 year old girls, awards were given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall, and then the next fastest time for a 1st time participant. Each winner received a photo plaque and a picture was mailed to each winner. A total of 64 awards were given out at the events. Below is a list of winners.
Finally at the end of the event, kids that had participated in all 3 events for 2011 (1-2-3 Run, duathlon, and triathlon) received a 1/2 zip Under Armour jacket with the Try Boro logo embroidered on it. A total of 20 kid received these jackets as a special thanks for participating in all 3.
